With ten years' effort, Guangdong Nortel R&D Center has successfully cultivated a localized R&D team that possesses the capability of independent development and undertakes Nortel's development tasks in China and the international market. The modest research team has grown from 20 at the beginning to over 800, with 98% holding a bachelor's degree or higher. After becoming a member of the R&D team, researchers undergo intensive domestic and international training that facilitates their personal and career development as experts in their respective fields.

Today, as a core link in Nortel's global R&D system, Guangdong Nortel can not only service customers in Greater China and Asia Pacific, but also provide services to countries throughout the world according to the assignments from Nortel.

Guangdong Nortel is connected to Nortel's global research institutes via Intranet and special-purpose IP phone system, so that it can easily achieve resources sharing, carry out cooperative projects with other laboratories, and have access to the latest technologies anytime and anywhere to maintain its leadership.

Guangdong Nortel R&D Center has a powerful software and hardware development platform, a robust testing platform and a 24-hour technical support platform. It is not simply undertaking software design tasks, but localizing the functions and features of Nortel's advanced technologies according to the local needs. Nortel's automated testing system is capable of performing thousands of test cases in a short period of time, ensuring the quality of delivered commercial software. During commercialization, the Center performs 24-hour remote trouble shooting for the customer's network via its robust tech support platform.

Guangdong Nortel R&D Center has upgraded its DMS to help traditional phone operators migrate to NGN. From the aspect of NGN, the Center localizes the functions and features of the Succession softswitch to make it more suitable to meet the local demands. The GSM-R system provided by Nortel to Ministry of Railways for the Qinghai-Tibet railway is also localized at Guangdong Nortel R&D Center, which means that Guangdong Nortel's products will be applied on the railway of the highest altitude in the world. Guangdong Nortel R&D Center is one of a very few R&D institutes that can perform GSM/UMTS and CDMA research and development at the same time, and at Guangdong Nortel R&D Center, the most advanced 3G technologies are demonstrated.
